Curtains Up for A Weekend of Arts in Tuolumne County

Step into Tuolumne County for a weekend where history, art, and nature come together. From strolling Gold Rush streets and sipping local wines to experiencing world-class theater productions, this getaway offers the perfect blend of culture and charm.

The Inn on Knowles Hill
Sonora Inn

Welcome to Tuolumne County! Settle into your cozy weekend retreat—perhaps the superb Inn on Knowles Hill B&B or the historic Sonora Inn, once graced by Grace Kelly during the filming of High Noon. Both lodging options are works of art in their own rights and behold captivating stories.

After check-in, ease into the evening with dinner at The Armory in downtown Sonora, where local flavors and lively ambiance set the tone for your getaway.

Stargazing in Tuolumne County is nothing short of magical. With its wide-open spaces and minimal light pollution, the County offers some of the clearest night skies in California. If you're feeling like a cosmo-adventure after dinner, you won't need to look much further than your home-away-from-home for the weekend. For those staying at the Inn at Knowles Hill, you'll get great night sky views from the grounds and if you're at the Sonora Inn, head to the rooftop patio. For a bigger stargazing adventure head away from the city lights, east on Highway 108 to Pinecrest Lake (about 40 minute drive one-way). Bring a flashlight and dress warm.

Farmers Market

Morning

Wake up and enjoy a hearty breakfast at your lodging before strolling through the Sonora Farmers Market (open Oct. 4 & 11). The market features local produce, baked goods, and handmade treasures. Afterward, wander downtown Sonora’s antique shops and visit the Aloft Art Gallery, where local artists showcase their talent. Don’t miss a stop at the Tuolumne County Visitors Center where the friendly and knowledgeable staff can tell you about the area. Take a selfie in front of the beautiful Twain Harte Audubon Bird Town chalk mural and pick up your Bird Town guide for tomorrow’s adventure.

Afternoon

Head to nearby Jamestown for lunch at the historic Jamestown Hotel before immersing yourself in California’s rail history at Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. Hop aboard an excursion train ride, then stroll the grounds and check out the Film Museum, which celebrates the County’s Hollywood connections. Wrap up the afternoon with wine tasting at Arthur Michael Vineyards & Winery’s Tasting Room, where you can sip and savor local vintages with the friendly makers. Before returning to your room to refresh, check out the festivities of the Handmade Parade at Rocca Park and along Main Street (Oct. 4 only).

Evening

Dinner awaits at the elegant Columbia City Hotel Restaurant in Columbia State Historic Park, where Gold Rush charm comes alive. Afterward, wander the historic streets of Columbia before taking your seat at the Fallon House Theatre for Sierra Repertory Theatre’s moving production of John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men or Nick Payne's Constellations. (The two performances alternate days.)
